What a warm atmosphere there was yesterday at the Waikino Station Café

29Aug10

The vintage train puffed into the station and eager people  disembarked for lunch;  a car club on a Sunday outing queued for lunch while they animatedly discussed the performance of their prized vehicle and others like us were on their way from “A” to “B”.   Situated in the Karangahake Gorge on SH 2 the Railway Station boasts a fine café.   Step inside the old railway station and step back in time – the walls are covered with historic pictures of the railway in its hey day and colouful handicrafts for sale. The fire is roaring.   Our 15 minute wait for lunch passes quickly with so much to look at.  And the food is well worth waiting for … delicious hock and vegetable soup and tasty toasted sandwich.   The fruit cake is moist and tasty.  Coffee is the only weak point of the lunch, but the service is great in spite of the long queues.  Appropriately the sign over the kitchen says “Engine Room.” www.karangahakegorge.co.nz

On to Whangamata and most clothing stores are closed, except for best shoes and accessories shop on the Coromandel, Tango’s.

Great buys in boots for end of winter sale and good selection of new season’s shoes – check out the red or burgundy patent ones.  The handbags are stunning, printed patent, just gorgeous.
