Eat/wear is fashionably on-trend.

We all know café breaks are part of a shopping day, but now you can find both under the same roof.

The Shelter in Mackelvie St, Ponsonby opened a few weeks ago – the brainchild of Auckland designer, Vicki Taylor. Of course, Vicki’s stunning label, Taylor, is a foundation label in the new complex, but more than a dozen local and international brands are housed in this airy space, once home to the Olympic Laundry.

Among the overseas labels is Barbara Gongini, an avant garde Danish designer. All the brands complement each other, giving the shopper a good choice of individual, stylish and creative pieces.

And when your visual feasting needs a break you’ll find aromatic Smith coffee at the Blend Café and bike store at the rear of The Shelter. The courtyard and imaginative planting will be an oasis in summer.

In Rotorua, The Outdoorsman, which specialises in outdoor gear, has given its café a revamp – it has taken over the office space and enlarged the previous small café. Taking its name from the space, The Office Café at 10 Tarawera Rd now has its own entrance, and the individual office spaces lend themselves well to meetings or groups. Wander through the corridor to try on some of our favourite outdoor brands – Icebreaker, Koru, Native World, RM Williams and North Face. Great range of tramping, hunting, fishing and sporting equipment and footwear.

Many of the outdoor brands, such as this turquoise Icebreaker hooded jacket, translate well into weekend wear, not just exercise gear. They are all doing interesting colours and fashionable styling.
