Hotels are one of my favourite places, but staying in them is a rare treat.

I have never stayed at a Hilton Hotel, until the weekend and the wonderful deals on the internet was a good lure to experience not just a Hilton, their newest one, at Taupo.   Opened at the end of last year the hotel is still luring guests with special “opening” deals.

The elevated location on the Napier/Taupo highway offers superb views out to the lake and the mountains of the Central Plateau beyond.  Even with this weekend’s terrible weather, Mt Ruapehu obliged with peaks piercing through the thick white cloud.   That was outside, but inside the Hilton, Lake Taupo is luxurious with superbly appointed rooms and the most comfortable bed.

The meals were also five star, master chef Simon Gault has planned the menu and the mains of rack of lamb and fresh salmon risotto we chose were exceptional. An outdoor heated pool provided the opportunity for gentle exercise to allow for the indulgence of a drink by the open fire.
