Race Fashions
Loved the outfit that won the Mercedes Prix de Fashion competition at Ellerslie Races on Derby Day this year. The 1950’s inspired cream dressed overlayed with black paisley was designed by Australian designer, Anaessia and worn by 20-year-old Sydney university student, Kelli Odell. The full skirt, with puff ball hemline and high collar, black sash gave the dress a theatrical appeal. Black accessories – shoes, with killer heels, neat handbag, gloves, bangle, and swish hatinator by Sydney milliner Neil Grigg.
Kelli won from more than 100 entrants and collected prizes worth $100,000.
As a founder of the Fashions-in-the-Field competition at Ellerslie, and a frequent judge, I always take great interest in the event each year. It is wonderful to see people making such an effort and putting together stunning oufits.
The five finalists and regional winners Charlotte Moor, Marion Farrell, Kelli Odell (grand winner), Sharday Mitha, and Vanessa Green at Ellerslie on Derby Day. Vanessa’s outfit was made by Auckland’s top milliner and sometimes designer, Dollie Vardin, who has been involved in the contest since its early days, both as a judge and a generous prize giver. Her hats are always winners. I always take my mother-of-the bride or groom clients to Dollie Vardin for a sensational headpiece to top off her outfit.
